First Athletic Supporters Event

Athletic Supporters will hold it’s first event come October in South Korea. We are expecting a nice turn-out and will provide an educational message to support volunteering and conservation causes through athletics. Stay tuned as we will provide more information about the event.

Tribute

Officially, boxing started as a match between two men, 3 minute rounds, gloves and a bout until the ‘finish’. The first official fight, credited by many historians, was between James Corbett, also known as ‘Gentleman Jim’, and John L. Sullivan. Though Sullivan was much more impressive in stance, ‘Gentleman Jim’ proved that lofty footwork and supreme hands could overcome a bigger, overpowering man. In the 21st round, James put down Sullivan and proved that skill overcomes.

Though there were many bouts before this, this fight opened the door for modern era boxing.

Fight one more round. When your feet are so tired that you have to shuffle back to the center of the ring, fight one more round. When your arms are so tired that you can hardly lift your hands to come on guard, fight one more round. When your nose is bleeding and your eyes are black and you are so tired that you wish that your opponent would crack you one on the jaw and put you to sleep, fight one more round – remembering that the man who always fights one more round is never whipped.” –Gentleman Jim

Boxing

Like every month, Athletic Supporters will focus on a different sport and bring to light the volunteering and conservation efforts within that sport. This month, boxing will be the main feature. There are exciting volunteering issues that the boxing world provides for their community.

National Bike Month

National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride.

In order to promote a healthier lifestyle, May has been decided on as National Bike Month. During this time, individuals are encouraged to bike to school on the 9th and bike to work on the 14th-18th.

The objective of this awareness is to encourage people to consider other means of transportation. In return, the participants can save money at the pump, reduce their carbon footprint and feel good about themselves.

Tom Schlafly Interview

Tom Schlafly discovered the importance of giving back a long time ago. He has excelled as an attorney, a writer, and co-founder of Schlafly Brewery. He explains that it is his “obligation to give back to the community” as St. Louis has given so much to him. He frequently volunteers his time to provide for the benefit of others in St. Louis and abroad.

This calling is something Tom has developed over the years as a successful St. Louis citizen. Currently, he fulfills this mission by sitting on the St. Louis Public Library Board of Directors, as appointed by the Mayor, and volunteers his time to safeguard “learning resources and information services that support and improve individual, family, and community life” as provided and conducted by the public library system. Nothing gives him greater good than to know that he is providing a helping hand to the city of St. Louis.

In addition, Tom also ensures the success of people abroad. In January 2006, before the Haiti disaster, Thomas decided that the area was in need of assistance. In his decision, he decided to sit on the CRUDEM Foundation Board and hold an annual fundraiser, A Taste of Haiti, for the hospital in Milot. He confirms that “100% of the proceeds…will support the work of the Foundation in Milot.” In addition, and after to the disastrous earthquake, Tom also held a special fundraiser to further assist the area. He continues to sit on the Board and does his part to provide and promote.

Giving back is something Tom credits as an obligation, or calling, that he has felt the need to provide. In his next adventure, Tom Schlafly will be included into a team of owners, led by Tom Stillman, to help guide the St. Louis Blues ownership into the franchise it deserves. He has claimed to be very excited about the opportunity and humbled by the experience.

This new ownership is exactly what the St. Louis Blues need. They need a group of committed individuals who not only have the desire to win, but the desire to give back to their community. The St. Louis Blues are as much of a community as the fans are of St. Louis. A group of owners who are obligated to give back to St. Louis and the St. Louis Blues are sure to guarantee success.

Athletic Supporters appreciates the interview with Tom Schlalfy and hopes for the continued success of the St. Louis Blues, Schlalfy Brewery and Bottleworks, CRUDEM and the city of St. Louis.

Caps Contribute–Overtime Thriller

The last few days have been very good to the Washington Capitals. On the 18th of April, the Caps donated more than $30,000 to the Washington Animal Rescue League. This money was raised from the Canine Calendars that were sold at every Capitals home game. The $31,320 will provide the canines shelter, food and care and help the organization to complete its goal: to “rescue, rehabilitate and re-home animals that have nowhere else to go.”

Also, on April 25th the Washington Capitals defeated the Boston Bruins in a overtime thriller. Joel Ward, who received a bit of negative attention from Boston, scored the game winning goal in dramatic fashion.

NHL Involvement

The NHL plays a part in many organizations and causes in the United States and abroad. From river clean-up and water sustainability to providing a helping hand.  The league also encourages many of it’s players, owners and employees to help local communities through charity.

David Backes and his wife Kelly are active in the St. Louis community and frequently take on projects. One such project is ‘David’s Dogs’ and ‘Kelly’s Kats’. This program helps neglected dogs and cats find a good home. David and Kelly are also on the Board of Directors and help promote and participate in various fundraisers.

The NHL message is for everyone to get involved:

NFl Playoffs–1, 2, 3 Fight!

The NHL is a league that holds it’s players accountable and their actions responsible. If, for example, a player acts out of accordance of the rules they are either held in the penalty box or have to explain their actions to Brendan Shanahan. Shanahan has become the leagues disciplinary head. He reviews plays and actions and considers suspensions and/or fines for players. And lately, he has had his hands full.

Just recently, the NHL playoffs exploded with hay-makers, hair-pulling and body-slams. These actions are meant to be reserved for wrestling matches, but they were evident in almost every playoff match over the weekend. However, this type of violence is often viewed with a smile by the players and coaches. In fact, in a recent poll the players voted 99.5% to 0.5% to NOT ban fighting. Players are often quoted on how they think fighting adds to the intensity and overall enjoyment of the game–both for them and for the fans.

With that being said, it should be noted again that the players will be responsible for their actions and that the NHL, with the aid of Shanahan, will review, suspend and fine where necessary.  The players are responsible for their actions and the NHL is responsible for the punishment.
